Would Damon Hill have made it into F1 without his name?

Postby Lawrence on Tue Jun 07, 2011 5:17 pm

Damon Hill seems like a genuinely decent guy and I've always like him, and he grew to be a very good racer....but I was just looking over his career, and he appears to have been stalled in F3000 and going no where. Would Damon Hill ever have made it into F1 if he was not a famous son?

NO! , he barely made as is . He should of have come with Senna but for the likes of un-salted butter one can only figure what he was doing all that time

Welcome to the forum RAGE TO WIN. :shiny:  :yay: I hope you enjoy your time here 8)

Damon handled himself pretty well, you don't get to be a world champion without some skill, even in the best car on the grid. Ask Mark Webber.

When you look back though it's amazing how many of the crashes he and Schumacher had were actually his fault though. I was shocked when I saw a bunch of them together on a compilation clip dvd. I always believed Schumacher was mostly to blame but it opened my eyes up I can tell you. Though of course Schumacher caused a good few too.

Who knows? He very well may have, especially in an era when there were so many cars they had to have pre-qualifying. I'm willing to bet quite a bit that he'd have never got the Williams seat without being Graham's kid though.

So in all fairness to Damon, I think he would have made it in F1, whether he is the son of Graham Hill or not.

+1

The impression I formed of him back in the day was that he was a bit of a whiner but nowadays I think he's a pretty decent fellow. I'd like to go back and watch some of his races and press conferences and see what impression I get now. Roscoe!

Frank Williams would never have given him the time of day, had he not been good, despite his name

Maybe so, but FW is also notorious for employing a lot of shitty drivers.

Perhaps not but I think he earned his place eventually.

Why does Frank Williams like signing drivers who have had relatives in F1 before?? Ex and current Williams drivers like Nico Rosberg, Ralf Schumacher, Bruno Senna, Damon Hill, Mr Lyria & Jean-Louis Schlesser have all had their family members in F1 before.

I think this proves Damon Hill got his seat at Williams mainly due to having a famous surname. :clint:

Looking at that picture I can't for the life of me believe that no one has got a picture like that of " THE PASS " in the
" BATTLE OF DIJON '79 "
