Reigning Dakar Champion is back! Al Attiyah will take part in a Humvie

Nasser Al-Attiyah will defend his Dakar Rally title in January in a Hummer run by Team Robby Gordon.

The 40-year-old Qatari won the 2011 event for Volkswagen after triumphing in a tight battle with his team-mate Carlos Sainz, but looked likely to miss next year's rally after the team pulled out of desert raids to focus on its World Rally Championship programme.

However, he has secured a late deal to drive a second Hummer alongside team owner Gordon, and will carry the number 300, which is usually reserved for former winners in such a situation.

"The thought of not doing the Dakar almost made me sick," Al-Attiyah said. "But things eventually turned around. It's fantastic because it's a new challenge for me and I'm proud of being able to represent Qatar."

Lucas Cruz, who sat alongside Sainz during the Spaniard's 2010 Dakar win for VW, will be Al-Attiyah's co-driver.

Should Al-Attiyah win, he will be only the second driver after Ari Vatanen in 1991 to triumph on the Dakar in two different makes of car.

Silly Autosport got their info wrong. Rene Metge won in a Range Rover and in a Porsche back in the 80's.

It is being whispered in the Netherlands that Jos "The Cross" Verstappen may be seen applying his vast experience of the kitty litters around the world in this Dakar, driving a Truck no less! Its the same deal that saw the start of Jan Lammers' career as a dakar trucky regular, replacing Frits van Eerd in the "jumbo" truck.

One problem though is that Jos hasn't got a trucky drivers licence yet, but they are working on it.

Leonid Novitskiy won the opening stage of the 2012 Dakar Rally, which also saw a fatality in the motorcycle section and early trouble for last year's winner Nasser Al-Attiyah.

The relatively short 57-kilometre Mar del Plata to Santa Rosa stage was marred by the death of bike competitor Jorge Boero, who suffered a fall at the 55km point and went into cardiac arrest. Medical crews attended within five minutes, but were unable to save the Argentinean's life.

2011 car winner Al-Attiyah, now driving for Robby Gordon's Hummer team following Volkswagen's departure, lost nine minutes on the stage when his engine lost oil pressure. Gordon stopped and towed his team-mate to the finish.

"We will see, but this does not look good," admitted Al-Attiyah. "And, whatever happens, this is not a good way to start the Dakar."

With their likely main rivals in trouble, X-Raid's Minis filled the top three at the end of the stage, with Novitskiy five seconds ahead of Krzysztof Holowczyc and nine in front of Stephane Peterhansel.

"Today's special was very short, so we put the pedal on the metal, especially in the sandy sector," said Novitskiy. "We only found another car on the course, but I was able to overtake it without any problems. In short: a good result for a perfect day."

Giniel de Villiers' Toyota and Gordon complete the early top five.

Leading positions after stage one:

Pos Driver Car Time/Gap
1. Leonid Novitskiy Mini 32m12s
2. Krzysztof Holowczyc Mini + 5s
3. Stephane Peterhansel Mini + 9s
4. Giniel de Villiers Toyota + 15s
5. Robby Gordon Hummer + 49s
6. Carlos Sousa Great Wall + 52s
7. Christian Lavieille Dessoude + 1m00s
8. Bernhard van Brinke Mitsubishi + 1m20s
9. Orlando Terranova Toyota + 1m56s
10. Ricardo Leal dos Santos Mini + 2m13s

Nasser wins stage 2 and jumps from 38th overall to 6th.

Stephane Peterhansel took over the lead of the Dakar Rally following the second stage on Monday, while Nasser Al-Attiyah went fastest to climb from 38th to sixth overall.

Peterhansel, who has nine Dakar wins to his name on four and two wheels, began the stage third in the standings behind his X-raid Mini team-mates Leonid Novitskiy and Krzysztof Holowczyc.

But he completed the 180-mile timed section of the 483-mile stage from Santa Rosa de la Plata to San Rafael in 2h48m12s, and this was easily enough to turn a 9s deficit into an overall lead of 2m28s.

It appeared that this would be enough to give him a stage win, but he had not bargained on Al-Attiyah, who lost 9m50s to engine problems on stage one, completing the day's running 54s faster than anbody else.

Al-Attiyah's drive brought his Robby Gordon-run Hummer to within 8m47s of Peterhansel's lead, although with four drivers between himself and the Frenchman.

Al-Attiyah's team boss Robby Gordon was third fastest on the stage, 2m42s slower than the Qatari, and moved into second place overall as a result.

The NASCAR regular had been fastest at the first checkpoint, but ran into problems later on in the stage.

"Last night we were given the road book for the bikes, not the cars, so we got lost trying to find a couple of the checkpoints," said Gordon at the stage finish.

"And then later on we were in the dust of [Giniel] de Villiers, and I clobbered a rock, so we got a puncture that we had to change and lost some time."

Holowczyc dropped to third in his Mini, 5s behind Gordon, with Toyota driver de Villiers fourth, a further 1m16s back. Nani Roma (Mini) climbed to fifth with Guilherme Spinelli (Mitsubishi) a spot behind Al-Attiyah in seventh.

Overnight leader Novitskiy dropped over 11 minutes to Peterhansel, causing the Russian to drop back to eighth spot.

Christian Lavieille, seventh overnight, broke down 40 miles into the stage, the Dessoude driver losing more than 45 minutes as he attempted repairs that would keep him in the rally.

Leading positions after stage two:

Pos Driver Car Time/Gap
1. Stephane Peterhansel Mini 3h20m33s
2. Robby Gordon Hummer + 2m28s
3. Krzysztof Holowczyc Mini + 2m33s
4. Giniel de Villiers Toyota + 3m49s
5. Nani Roma Mini + 5m32s
6. Nasser Al-Attiyah Hummer + 8m47s
7. Guilherme Spinelli Mitsubishi + 11m07s
8. Leonid Novitskiy Mini + 11m17s
9. Ricardo Leal dos Santos Mini + 14m41s
10. Lucio Alvarez Toyota + 15m22s
